1980 15hp pull start help

So I have the spring rewind onto it and all parts, but now I don't know how to put it back together. There is a small metal piece refered to as the spring, pinion on the iboats diagram (part 8) and I have no idea where to put it. And once I get it on, how do I put it back together? Thanks

Actually part number 6, not 8 on the diagram. Need to know where to put this, and then how to get the whole mechanism back together.
