I inherited a Model 40 Tiller. I know very little about outboards. The engine was not run for a few years, and the prop was in rough shape. I changed the oil in the gear case. I then removed the propeller and hardware.
In looking beyond the propeller shaft and into the chamber where the shaft originates, I notice a fair amount of what appears to be gear case oil pooled at the bottom of the chamber. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the oil was slowly dripping from a small factory-created hole located on the lower lip of the chamber. Putting the propeller back on does not cover the hole (located directly below the propeller on the lip of the chamber once the propeller is tight on the shaft) and I still detect some oil oozing from the hole. What is going on here?
I apologize in advance if this question seems too basic. Thank you.
