  • 1994 70 HP low idle issue at dock and loading

I have a 70 HP 94 Outboard. I have changed the intake seal, I have cleaned the carbs. I have checked the linkage and it looks fine. They all move at the same time.

The problem I am having is that at 1500 rpms I can cruise forever. As soon as I drop under about 1500 rpms the motor seems to start choking and then stalls.

My idle rpms are about 1200 which I know is higher than usual in water. I was wonder which of the 3 idle screws should I try to adjust first. I put it in the water today and cranked it. I ran it out in the middle of the lake at 34 mph with no issues.

I took the cover off and started playing with the screws but it would really cut off before I could really play with the screws. If I pull up the idle switch and let it idle can I adjust the idle screws that way? I am having problems when at the dock keeping the motor running because I think of the high idle problem. I just put new plugs in and the gas is all good and ethanol free. I am mixing 27 oz of oil to 9 gallons of gas. Which is 50:1 ratio.

I just need some input if I should play with the top screw or the bottom screw or even the middle screw first.

    Any help would be appreciated.
