  • Evinrude 90 HP 2 stroke high idle

    Model # E90TLESB

I'm working on a 90HP, 2 stroke for a friend. A little history......in the last year the fuel has seen its fair share of water. I found last week alot of water and naturally the motor ran pretty bad. I drained and replaced the fuel, fuel water seperator, flushed hose and carbs.

When starting on muffs the motor idles high, 1700 rpm and will not idle down. I removed the air horn cover and there is gas standing on the surface of the air horn. The butterflys are closed.

I am leaning towards flooding due to gunk from water intrusion, but uncertain at this point.

This motor has the electric choke (for lack of better terms). Can this choke stick "on"? This motor starts at the turn of the key which is a little unusual for an old two stroke.

While running on the muffs last week the motor went into runaway and I had to kill the ignition and pull the fuel line. I am open to all suggestions before I pull the carbs for a cleaning.

    What year is the engine?

The Idle adjustment screw is on the throttle\advance arm on mine 90HP (1981) But, I found that even if I adjusted the screw, I had to push the throttle onto the screw. try it without the cables connected so you can manipulate the throttle arm.

you did say the butterflies are closed, so it may be something else.

Another possibility is a stuck float allowing gas to flow by the needle valve. Hard to believe you would have two stuck floats though.

I beleive based on the SN its an 89.

I removed the plugs after running it and the top plugs were wet and bottom plugs looked good, in fact dry. I am wondering if I have a flooding condition or a lean condition, maybe a vacuum leak. With the butterflys closed and idling this high, 1700 RPM, where is it getting air to run this high?

Check you carb mounting nuts and the gaskets for the carb mount. Also make sure your primer is working properly, if equipped.

I am going out of town for 10 days on a family emergency and could not get back to the motor. The lady has taken the boat to a friend, who supposedly is a Indy open wheel race mechanic. She took it too him previously and with it idling a 1700 rpm he told her it was fine. Now he has it back and he's probably gonna hate me..........but he just should have said "no". Hope he fixes the problem before I get back...............
