  • stalling when engaging in gear

ok i have a 1981 e90tlcim 90hp v-4. first i will tell you the problem then what i have done so far to correct it. first off cold or hot does not matter. actually maybe the problem is less persistant while cold. but engine starts and idles perfect. i can go to engage in forward or reverse makes no difference, and the engine stalls doesnt sputter just dies. i can immediatelt restart it and either run the fast idle for a minute or two then take off or i can fire it up and press the key in (electric prime/choke) as i engage the throttle and it will pick up and go on and run WOT with no issues. i can run WOT all day with no more issues. but as soon as i park (or switch off) for a while i have to go thru the same steps again to get it to take off. and its getting aggravating really quick. on muffs of course it runs flawlessly. but in the water i have this problem. now to clarify what i have done and tried so far. cleaned carbs, rebuilt carbs, replaced fuel lines, checked float setting, checked firing, compression tested hot and cold., cleaned carbs again found obstruction in mid range jet, still no difference, tried fresh fuel, did a lync and sync, checked timing advance, checked fuel pump, replaced plugs. by the way the primer bulb stays hard and squeezing the primer bulb doesnt help when its acting up. and this is a consistant problem not oc***ional. and seems to be worse when the engine warms up. its almost like a really bad cold start everytime i crank the engine. now any suggestions are helpful. again engine idles perfect and runs WOT perfect. just stalls upon take off.

Could the idle be set to low to over come the prop load?Set the idle up a little.

Now this is a good possibility. What should this engine idle at? And where is the idle adjustment?

But I will add that once I get it going I can idle in gear with no problems. It's just getting it to go initially from being parked for a few minutes. Like I said earlier its like a cold start every time I start it up through out the day.

Not sure where the idle is on your motor. Some are on the side of the engine cowl, others on the carb linkage. One other thing I thought about .Maybe someone has removed the thermostat. If so the engine never warms up and would cause a cold start every time.

Also if the thermostat is stuck the water just goes thru the by p***.

the thermostats are in and function properly. i did idle the engine up some today. and adjust the timing advance, will test on the water tomorrow.
