  • 1969 33e69a overheating

I have replaced the Water pump with kit 0379744. I have no discharge from exhaust port and the powerhead is running hot. I have tested it in a barrel and in the water with the same result. Looking for some help.

Run a compression test to see if has a blown head gasket.

      compression test

I tested the compression and the engine has 105# in both cylinders. I am not getting any water spray from the exhaust port.

When you replaced the impeller in the water pump, you may not have got the the water line hooked up correctly.I put a little grease on it because I have had the rubber in the impeller housing fold up on me.Check that out. Elton

          Byp*** cover problem?

Has anyone had any similar problem with an older Johnson or Evinrude I believe the water pump is fine I am thinking the water flow may be blocked or byp***ing. Any help will be appreciated.

What about the therostat? Yes i have had this problem.Take the water cover off the head, pull the themostat.Leave the cover off and start the motor for a few seconds.Water should pour out the themostat hole. be double sure the intake in the foot is fully submerged.

                Thermostat?

Thanks for the reply. When I look at the Outboard I do not see a Thermostat. The parts diagram does not show a thermostat. This is a 1969 Johnson 33HP.

                      Thermostat

The 18HP has a thermostat. The 33 HP does not have a thermostat.
