My starter rope wouldn’t recoil on my 1988 20hp E20CRCCA Rude. Took the rewind starter apart and found the starter spring shield was chewed up in the center. I’ve considered using a coffee can lid to make a new shield. It doesn’t seem to be far off from the original part. I’d only be saving $8 ordering a new part with shipping. Would I be ok with this make shift shield or not bother? I realize the material of the plastic may have different elements so I’m not sure if I’d be setting myself up for another repair? Maybe it’ll work in the meantime and still order a replacement. What do you think?
Also, is there any trick to getting that darn coil wound up and back together? Are there instructions on how to re-***emble the rewind starter somewhere? I have something but it’s pretty vague.
Thanks,
Mark
