Evinrude Johnson What Happened?

Just looking to find out what happened to this company. In the 60s they were great motors, I spoke with a retired dealer a few years ago and he said there was a time if a used boat had an evinrude on it he could not sell it. No one wanted to have anything to do with these motors. So what happened, what was their down fall?

Not certain but ***ume meeting EPA requirements was very hard to meet with the 2 stroke engine and so instead of changing to 4 stroke engines they closed the marine division.
