  • Overheating

I have a 1997 35hp Evinrude ob. I just was given the boat and took it out for a test run. The overheat alarm sounded and I shut down and was towed in. I was spitting water out of the peep hole in the rear. The thermostat cover was extremely hot and was told that the thermostat was stuck. I purchased a new thermostat and installed it. Yesterday took the boat to the dock and ran the motor for about 20 minutes at idle. I had no alarm at this point. Took off and increased speed slowly to full throttle. About 5 minutes later got an overheat alarm. Shut down and let it cool down. I lowered the trim all the way and did not overheat again, however would not get back to full throttle and could only hold about 3000 rpm and had not power. Have been told that my water pump is in need of replacement and then should be back in action. Looking for some advice not much experience with outboard motors. Any suggestions?

Need to run a compression test to see if any engine damage. Will need to replace water pump.
