  • 1979 55hp

I fish a lot on the Mississippi River in a 16 ft aluminum boat with a 55hp motor on the back. The whole rig is from 1979. Last summer I drug it out of my grandfathers pasture and rebuilt the boat interior and got the motor to run. It took a new wiring harness, rebuilding the carbs, new water pump impeller, and just general cleanup. After 12 years of sitting up it cranked and ran just fine all summer. Well this year I decided to go back through the carbs and clean them good before I took it out for the first time of the year, when I got it out on the river I immediately notice that it isn't running like it did last year. It runs smooth and consistent but it seems like it is running at about half throttle. The boat barely planes out and top speed is way down from last year and it was already a slow boat. I have looked at the carbs and everything looks normal to me, but I'm confused what to do now.

Probably need to remove carbs and see if are clean, check to see if have fire on all cylinders. Need to run a compression check.

I found a gas leak between the fuel filter and the gas hose from the tank. I figured out that with just me it runs pretty good, at good speed feels plenty powerful. As soon as you add another person or two it bogs the motor down quite a bit and cuts the mph down in half or more.
