73 40 hp evinrude overheating

I recently got a 40 hp 73 model 40355 with cooling problems.
I am trying to get to the water pump but the lower unit will only drop about 1 inch.

I have tried everything that i can think of but can't get the drive shaft out of the motor.

Disconnect shift shaft at top of shaft under carbs on engine.

I don't mean to sound disrespectfull, but my motor is not made that way.

I found this answer when i searched the forum and it is just not like mine
My carb is on the front of the engine (just 1 carb) Looking to the front of the boat the shiffter is on the right side and the gas on the left.

I am an newby at boat motors so please give me as much detail as you can.
I want to go fishing.

I found a small access plate on the middle of the lower unit that hides 2 set screws on the shifter linkage. is this where i need to disconnect the linkage?

If so how do i get it back together?

Yes unscrew the nut and pull ferrule off shaft, re***emble in reverse order.
