Is there supposed to be a spring covered magnet under the shift rod cover in the lower unit? It seemed to not really have a proper home in there. Thanks.

Nope.... And I just checked the OMC part manual rather than depending on memory.

Thank you. After some google searches I believe it to be a "magnetic filter". Apparently designed in the 80s and someone thought it to be a good idea. I believe I will be leaving it out, lol.
