25hp evinrude 1900 changing jets

I was told that I could boost my 25hp, 1990 evinrude, by changing the two jets on my carb. Is this true? I have purchased the jets recomended by boats.net for the 30 and 35 hp,but before I change to them is there anything else I should do or know? I also have a 2nd problem ,I messed with the low speed adjustment, because at idle or low speeds my motor back fires very irregularly and now ,after messing with the low speed adjustment,it some times after back fire dies out, however at 1/2 to full throttle it runs fine.

Sounds like a lean pop. Check your idle air screw, should be around 1.5 turns out. If still lean pops, then remove and clean your carburetors.
