1979 OMC stern drive seawater pickup pump

I am replacing the pickup pump on a 1979 OMC stern drive (upper gear housing). The manual I have instructs you to seat the new impeller in the housing with a counter-clockwise rotation. However, the removal instructions show the impeller in the housing with the vane orientation indicating a clockwise rotation. Which is correct?

It shouldn't matter, the vanes will flip to the proper rotation when the engine starts.
