won't go in gear

itook my lower end off to replace the bearings also my water pump. pump works great . but now my motor won't go in gear . shift rod is attached . try to ajust rod at lower end . still no luck . HELP

remove the lower unit again and manually shift into and out of gear. If works then there must be and adjustment issue or something is disconnected.
