  • Need Help w/ 1999 70 Hp four stroke Water Pump

I need some help please. I have a 1999 evinrude 70hp four stroke
    Model # E70FTLEE build date 7/1998.

To start with this model # is not showing up anywhere in any parts manuals.
I found it on the lower side of the motor next to the serial #.

My concern is I just replaced my impeller with a new one ( water pump kit # 5031731). when I removed the lower unit to inspect the impeller I noticed there was no gromet or bushing around the top of the water pump housing where the drive shaft goes through. The inside of my lower unit had sand and crud in it as well.

I have looked at part manuals and no gromet is shown to seal the top of the water pump housing. I have also spoken to several Evinrude dealers with the same result.
Strange thing just about every other outboard has a gromet or bushing to seal this area to ensure proper cooling and prevent water from seeping from around the opening.

Inaddition, The water flow from the discharge port at the rear of my motor is and has always been very week.

Please let me know is this normal ?

The closest parts listing I see is a 1998 E70FTLECS.
No there is no seal on top of housing, and that motor has a high volume/low pressure water flow, that is normal.

      Thanks for the input.

I found it very strange the water flow just trickles out of the discharge port even under load and there is no bushing on top of the water pump housing to seal the housing to prevent water leakage.

I read somewhere that some Evinrudes have water flow inside of the lower unit / engine area to decrease exhuast noise. ( To be clear; when you remove the lower unit and look up into the engine cavaty, where the drive shaft and water tube are located. My engine has a coating of algie and even some sand along the walls of the engine wall.)

I have spoken with a few dealers, however I have not been able to get a clear answer.

The midsection will fill up with water. There should be a seal on the top of the impeller housing.

Is the seal only included with or a non-removable part of the Impeller Housing ?

This is no seperate part number for the seal, it is not included in the water pump rebuild kit and it is not shown in any parts book I have seen...

At this point it looks like I need to gamble and order an impeller housing and find out..

          Thanks

The seals are removable, they call them bushings in your model. If there is excessive wear they will not allow enough water to flow. (31 & 30)

              Thanks.
However the two numbers you are refering to ( 30 and 31) according to the diagram are for the Water Tube Bushings.

My concern relates to the opening in the water pump housing directly above the center hole in the impeller.
This is where the gear shaft p***es through the impeller up through the water pump housing.

No bushings are listed, in any parts diagram I have seen. Based on looking at my water pump housing, which has no bushing around this opening, water is not going to be prevented from seeping around the hole while the gear shaft is installed.

That is the drive shaft, there are no bushings or seals. This would not be your problem unless your impeller key is not installed.

                  Thanks,

I have to disagree, according to the gear case diagram # 30 and 31 are for the Water Tube.

Upon removal of the water pump housing the impeller key was in place and I installed a new key on the drive shaft when I replaced the impeller.

There was no seal around the opening where the drive shaft p***es through the water pump housing to seal around the drive shaft. - Makes no sense to me.
