Evinrude 115 starter issues

I have an 2003 E115FPLSTB. When I try to start it, it will try to crank but stops and makes a loud screeching noise. If i mess with it long enough it will eventually start and run fine. The local shop thought it was the bendix but a new one didn't help. Now they say it's might be the starter. I'm leary of part changers but wondered if anybody else had ever experienced this issue.

Check all your connections, with a volt meter verify that you are getting the 12v to the starter relay and then to the starter when enguaged (will drop voltage). The starter is making the noise right?

sounds like the top or bottom bearing in the starter might be going bad.

It sounds like a bad bearing or bushing. It will eguage the flywhell briefly but then drop out and make the screeching noise. Some time it will not enguage the flywheel and just screech.

Looks like i'm about to buy a new starter!

I have this exact same problem now with my 1980 Evinrude 115.
What was your fix?

Sounds like a rooster crowing don't it?You can have the old starter rebuilt cheaper than a new starter.Need bushings and brushes.The armature gear may be worn out.
