need help ***embling thermostat pieces

I just bought a thermostat kit and am having a hard time figuring out how to get all of these pieces into the housing. Specifically, I am not sure how the pieces circled in green should go in. The piece circled in blue is the original cover that was on my engine and looks a lot different than the replacement. I did not see anything related to this in the service manual and the parts catalog was not very helpful either. I'm guessing I don't use all of the parts and use the original end cap but am not sure. Thanks.

on the thermostat itself...does it matter which end faces the engine?

The rubber faced point should face the motor.

none of it is rubber. it is all plastic. looking at the picture...should the top or bottom be facing the motor?
