  • Is it the solinoid????????????????

    1984 35HP Evinrude

Starter keeps running after motor starts. To keep it from running I must pull the fuse at the starter solinoid, or turn the ignition off. I rebuilt the starter a few weeks ago and I'm sure I have the solinoid wired correctly.

I'll try to explane how it's wired.

The solinoid has two large posts, one at 12 0'clock, and one at 6 O'clock, and two small posts on the side facing the rear, 1 at 2 O'clock and 1 at 4 O'clock.

The battery and two other red wires go to the large 12 O'clock post.
The large 6 o'clock post is grounded.

A red/yellow wire is connected to the small 2 O'clock post.
a black wire is on the small 4 O'clock post.

Is this correct and if so what is my problem?? I'm guessing it's the solinoid but not sure.

    Thanks for any help.

Neither big post should be grounded. One goes to the battery and the other goes to the starter. On the small post look closely, one should have an S, this should be the red/yellow. When removing the wires, the red/yellow should only have power only in the start position.

You are correct and bottom large was to the starter not to ground. The solinoid is wired correctly.

And in doing the test you mentioned I found the problem. The ignition switch was sticking in the start position. Last week I noticed that the that holds it in the control box nut was loose, and I must have overtightened it. I loosened it a bit and it doesn't stick any longer. Talk about dodging a bullet!

      Thanks for helping,
