I recently bought a 1976 Gl***master with a 1976 70 H.P. Evinrude Outboard... Was hesitant to buy something that old but I took a friend with me who knows more about boats than me and he ***ured me after we started it up and it ran well for at least 20 mins that it was a good buy! That being said he pointed out that it needed a head gasket... He said probly from sitting for a few years... First of all is that a complex job? He ***ured me that we could do the job as long as we had the torque specs. Where can I find them and where should I purchase the parts? Among other questions I'm sure I will have? I am wondering since I'm preparing this boat to be in salt water mainly are there certain precautions or parts I should use? Generally asking are these motors reliable? I believe the motor was maintained well... Are they noted for any problems? Always wanted a vintage Evinrude now that I own one just wanted some advice from some pros to help me in my journey!!!! I ve been told that the 2 best days of a boat owners life are when he buys one and when he sells it!!!! Hope that doesnt hold true for me and would appreciate any and all advice I can get..... Thanks.....

Yes changing the head gasket on the older models is pretty easy. I recommend if you are planning on keeping to obtain a service manual (see link). You should purchase your boat motor parts from Boats.net - New and Used Boats for Sale, Outboard Boat Motors, and Discount Outboard Boat Parts.
Original outboard product and service manuals for Johnson, Evinrude, Gale, and OMC
