  • 1981 Evinrude 35 has loud exhaust now

Took my new to me boat out and all was good and quite till the return trip. It was noticably loud but ran the same. I am thinking that the exhaust gasket is bad under the engine. What does everyone think? What will I need to do to pull the engine up and install a new gasket? Is it as simple as unbolting the engine lifting it up and replacing it? I have a repair manual ordered for it but wanted some opinions first. Thanks!

Its not too complicated, just time consuming. With a manual you should not have any problems. Could be a gasket, with the powerhead removed, check the exhaust tuner for holes.

Not sure what the exhaust tuner is but I will look it up when I get the manual. I am asuming that by "powerhead" you are refering to the engine? Being a newbie I have to get used to the new terms.

The tuner is the exhaust tube below the engine (powerhead).

Got the repair manual for the outboard today. I am rather disapointed in that it does not show how to remove the engine. I will just have to look at it and figure it out. I was hoping it could just be unbolted and lifted out.

It is just unbolted and lifted out. You have to be sure to unhook everything and unbolt all the bolts. If it gives you problems, your missing a bolt somewhere.
