  • Lower Unit replacement

    Hello all,

Well i bought a 21.5 Chris Craft project boat with a 1996 Evinrude 200 OceanPro. Im a college student on a tight budget so im trying to save as much money as possible. I have a non working power tilt that is guinea rigged to pull this m***ive engine in and out.

Needless to say, i finally got the boat running, popped it in the water. I wound up hitting the side of the lower unit where there was already a crack and busting open the gear compartment. I was in 9 feet of water... the prop is still fine.

So the lower unit has to go... i have found some cheap options, but my engine is stuck in gear, will removing the lower unit allow me to get this back to neutral? Is the only gear box located in the lower unit or could i have destroyed something up top too?

Any idea how easy of a fix this could be. Its really disheartening after ive put in so much work to be at this stage all over again, but i guess that is life with boats.

    Any insight is much appreciated!

Once yo remove gearcase check that the shift linkage on motor does work ok, the new gearcase will probably solve the neutral problem.

I found a lower unit to a Johnson 175 (2004) VRO. Will this fit my model? I believe the VRO's were big V6 2 strokes.

I need the model numbers for both motors to be very accurate.
