  • After 1990 50hp gearcase seal kit install....

is it more likely or less that I'd have to do some sort of shift linkage adjustment? I ask because after reinstalling the lower unit and cranking it up, the prop turns while the remote control is in neutral... didn't do that before, ever, fwd/neut/rev shifting has always been perfect. During the seal kit install, I took great pains not to rotate the shift lever, ***uming that if I didn't turn it, the length would be the same, so after the rebuild, the shifting should be the same as before the work was done.

So wondering if I messed something up, or is this normal and something needs adjustment, or what?

    thanks...

If you are 100 percent sure that you did not turn the shift lever, then attemp to adjust the cable, if this does not work then something maybe incorrectly installed in the lower unit.

So it is possible to get out of adjustment even without turning the shift rod? I don't want to mess with it if it's not the problem.

      thanks...

No, you should not have to adjust the cables when removing the gearcase, however you should attempt to adjust the cables prior to removing the gearcase.
