I am helping a good friend repair his 1992 Evinrude 200XP and have a few questions:
1.Has anyone had a problem with the regulator/rectifier shorting out or catching fire?
2. Has there been any known issues with electrical problems on these motors?
Last summer he took his 20' Stratos out on the lake and ran it for about 1.5 hours and then realized smoke smoke was coming from the engine hood. He shut it down right away. Well we pulled the engine hood and the four bolts holding the regulator/rectifier ***embly in and all the wires were melted inside! We have just ordered a new OEM reg/rec ***embly and will be replacing the broken wiring but we also need to be sure there wont be some sort of recurring problem.
