Needed to replace water pump impeller. Could not separate Gear Case ***y. from Cylinder/Crankcase ***y. To separate had to pry at gear case joint and broke plastic water pump housing. Upper male splined end of Shaft remained in female spline of crankshaft. Suspect previous owner did not grease splines. No grease retaining means on shaft. Removed power head, placed it upside down and applied Kroil to splines.

What is standard way to separate splines without damage? Also, parts list shows an O-ring (p/n 0303191) above water pump housing but there seems no seat for it. Does it go on the shaft at the spline interface to retain grease therin? Thanks in advance for you attention.

May have to apply small amount of heat which will damage seals.

      1984 Evenrude 6hp Model E6RCRM, SHAFT/POWER HEAD RUSTED TOGETHER

I Tried applying a little heat from a propane torch while knocking against vice-grip pliers very tightly clamped to the shaft near the motor. Applied Kroil as it cooled. This had no effect.

What are factory trained repair mechanics taught to do?
