  • Replacing the shift rod O-ring on a 9.9 (1976)

    Hello all,

I’m trying to resuscitate my father-in-law's 1976 Evinrude outboard.

    1) By pressuring the gear case, I figured out where the water leak that’s causing the “milkshake” gear oil. The seal on the shift rod is leaking. How on earth do I replace that bushing and O-ring? Do I have to pull the entire gear set out?

Thanks a million for any advice!

    Don

It's a press in type bushing, without special tools might be able to screw a screw into it and pull out while appling some heat to housing.

      Shift rod

OK, thanks. In order to do that, I have to get the shift rod out. Does it just screw out, and if so, will it line up to just screw back in?

      Thanks,

      Don
