  • 1970 40 Worn Cylinders

Just to say Hi to the Forum.

I have in my shop a 1970 40hp Evinrude, that is pretty much knackered.

Psi of about 45-50, 15 psi down on one cylinder. Opened her up and the cylinder is really badly scored showing signs of "blow past" the pistons can be moved side to side by about an inch.

So the question is can the cylinder be rebored, or is it plated in some way that means after we rebore it we have to replate it?

If that is a no go what is a ball park figure for a new crankcase/cylinder?

Also if we spruce up the top end would it be wise to overhall the bottom end, bearings etc etc.

Cheers in advance for any advice.

Depending on the amount of damage, repairs vary.

will not need replating. Not sure if it can be bored.
